The Podcast Playback: A Conversation with Mike Ribble

#ECI832

I recently had the opportunity to interview Mike Ribble, a digital citizenship expert and author of the 9 Elements of Digital Citizenship. With his vast knowledge and experience with the subject, he not only brought incredible insight to the conversation, but also hope and encouragement during the current time that we are living in.

There’s no doubt about it, as a society, we are collectively going through an experience that is challenging and uncertain. However, this experience brings us the opportunity to grow closer together as a community… and one gift that we have during this unpredictable time is technology. The conversation that I had with Mike Ribble was so timely, especially since COVID-19 has required us to do our teaching, communicating, and learning online. We discuss crucial topics that embody Ribble’s 9 Elements of Digital Citizenship, something that is so valuable to learn about in our current digital world. In this interview, you will learn more about:

  • Digital Citizenship
  • Digital Literacy
  • Digital Safety, Security, and Privacy
  • Digital Access and the Digital Divide

In our conversation, Mike reminds us that yes, “there will be missteps as we go along”, however, “we will learn a lot about how we learn in a digital space through out this.”

Don’t forget to check out Mike Ribble’s website for more information about digital citizenship, including the 9 Elements of Digital Citizenship. You can also learn more about these important topics from some of his books: Digital Citizenship Handbook for School Leaders: Fostering Positive Interactions Online, “Digital Citizenship in Schools, Third Edition, and “Raising a Digital Child. If you want to learn more about Ribble’s 9 Elements of Digital Citizenship, you can check out a previous blog post I wrote called “The Podcast Playback: The 9 Elements of Digital Citizenship Edition”.

My hope is that after listening to this podcast interview, you will feel inspired and motivated to make a positive change in our digital world. As we move forward and navigate through this unprecedented time, let us use the gift of technology to work together, inspire each other, and connect with one another.

  1. Well done Amanda! You asked great questions! It was interesting to hear his answers as they relate to digital citizenship and the pandemic. Some of the take-away statements for me include: more collaboration in a digital space, hope and pause, and protecting yourself and your students. I really enjoyed listening to this, you have a voice for podcasts!

  2. Amanda,

Excellent podcast! I learned so much from your conversation with Mike Ribble. Thank you for sharing! I appreciate how he addressed the access and equity piece. Thinking of it like utilities (water, power, etc.) is a great perspective. If society is truly going to move forward with making digital access and equity a right, resources must be provided. I feel like the response has always been, “Well, there’s public libraries.” Like you mentioned, what do we do if people don’t have access to libraries? As scary of a time as this is, there is a lot of opportunity for growth and re-examining current practices.

You also asked great questions! Well done! 🙂

  3. Great podcast content-wise and production wise. So much to reflect on … will this current situation be an insight into digital learning in the future … will the divide become greater … will we be different people when we come out the other side of this … to name a few thoughts. I really like the point you made in your text leading up to the podcast about the gift of technology … I agree with you and I hope this provides a silver lining to the situation we are in. Thanks

  4. Hi Amanda,

Thank you so much for such an amazing podcast. What a special treat to listen to Mike Ribble! What really makes me wonder is how education is going to change after the pandemic? I think many of us feel that change is needed. I do feel that everything happened so fast that teachers could not prepare for it, and learn how to move forward. I have noticed effective collaboration and I feel if we come out as a stronger community, it will be a lot easier to share ideas and continue learning from each other.
